With the fast pace of motor racing, rapid media management is essential as photographers work to deliver clear shots of the action promptly to editors worldwide, including a global roster of media outlets, both specialist and non-specialist, such as Autosport, Autocar, F1 Racing and RACER.

The company also provides bespoke photography to the Motorsport Network’s entire portfolio of magazines and websites, and holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of motorsport imagery in the world, consisting of over 26 million shots including the first-ever Grand Prix, the 1906 French GP.

Digital asset management (DAM) enables organizations to have a central system to store all important files. With FotoWare’s software, everyone can find, share, and reuse images, videos, and documents much more efficiently, thanks to the ability to add descriptive metadata upon upload.

Tim Clarke, Digital Account Manager at LAT Images, explains: “Over the last few years, our editing workload has increased significantly with more clients, and the ever more important requirement to deliver images in near real-time for social media. In-house, we built a bespoke workflow system to move images around. It worked well, but as our picture desk team grew and we had multiple editors working shifts back at base, we needed to share editing duties in a highly efficient manner.”

Previously, LAT Images had used local machines and a folder-based workflow, which worked for a single editor. Now though, with FotoWare’s server-based workflow, called FotoWeb, photographers can transfer images wirelessly directly from their cameras so clients and editors can quickly collect and process incoming material as it is transmitted.

The DAM software currently enables LAT Images to distribute images from FotoWare to clients via FTP into their systems, and the company sees potential for using FotoWeb in the future so that clients can receive images directly from photographers, and photographers can share images with each other on the platform too.

Tim added: “A vast amount of what we do is about speed – delivering images to multiple clients in as near to real-time as possible. But there is also a need to supply images at a more considered pace to media clients and our historical archive. With FotoWare, we can make both things happen without having to duplicate work or compromise the speed. The primary users so far are our picture desk editing team. But we can foresee FotoWare being used by photographers and clients in the very near future.”

LAT Images installed FotoWare’s DAM through Xenario, FotoWare’s Gold Partner in the UK.
